Webinar on Clinical Medicine | New Insights in Human Myocarditis: From Bench to Bedside

Dear colleagues,
Human myocarditis remains a critical clinical challenge, particularly regarding its cause, progression and treatment. Myocarditis may vary from one case to another and remarkably influence the patient outcome.
The morpho-molecular characterization of inflamed myocardium through endomyocardial biopsy is extremely helpful and mandatory for the most severe and progressive forms. The risks of the procedure are very limited (< 1%), particularly when performed by experts in centers for cardiac surgery support. In terms of cause, myocarditis can be the result of infectious agents, autoreactive mechanisms or clear-cut autoimmune disorders. New pathways of myocardial inflammation, e.g., gout and psoriasis, have been recently reported, thus extending and improving the modalities of therapeutic intervention.
The aim of the present webinar is to present new insights on human myocarditis with help from some key experts on the topic.

Prof. Dr. Andrea Frustaci was born in S. Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio (CZ), Italy on 8th April 1952. He graduated from the Catholic University of Rome with full honors on 2nd November 1977. He passed the Postgraduate Board in Cardiology with full honors, at the Catholic University of Rome. He has since been an Assistant Professor in Cardiology at the Catholic University School of Medicine of Rome, Policlinico "Agostino Gemelli". He is an Associate Professor of Cardiology at La Sapienza University in Rome and leads the IRCCS L.Spallanzani lab of cellular and molecular cardiology of endomyocardial biopsies and IRCCS San Raffaele. He is the author of 230 papers on international journals regarding mostly myocarditis, cardiomyopathies, and heart failure with a Hirsch (H) index of 44.

Viral Myocarditis
Prof. Dr. Heinz-Peter Schultheiss is a professor of Internal Medicine and Cardiology and the chairman of the Cardiovascular Center and Director of the Medical Clinic II (Department of Cardiology and Pulmonology) at Charité University Hospital Berlin in Germany. Prof. Dr. Schultheiss has published >550 high-ranking, PubMed listed paper, and several book chapters (Braunwald, Harrison, Schering Foundation, ESC textbook, among others). Since 1990, Prof. Dr. Schultheiss has been a member of several national and international, scientific and clinical societies, such as "Council on Cardiomyopathies" of the International Society of Cardiology. Prof. Dr. Schultheiss focuses on internal medicine, endocrinology, myocarditis, cardiomyopathy, and cardiology.

Giant Cell Myocarditis
Prof. Leslie T. Cooper, M.D., is a cardiologist and chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Florida. Prof. Cooper's clinical interests and research focus on clinical and translational studies of rare and undiagnosed cardiomyopathies, myocarditis, and inflammatory cardiac and vascular diseases such as giant cell myocarditis, cardiac sarcoidosis, eosinophilic myocarditis, and Takayasu's arteritis. He has published over 300 original peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and reviews. In addition he has spent years working with clinicians and researchers around the world to further diagnosis, treatment, and care for myocarditis and cardiomyopathies. Prof. Cooper is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Association, The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and the Society for Vascular Medicine and Biology. He is also the founder and former president of the Myocarditis Foundation and continues to serve on their board of directors.
